It pains me to say but paradym is no longer a group. I will leave the release page up if anyone needs the torrents.
Update – Some staff members are trying to form a group to continue fansubbing toradora, so watch out for releases in the future.
Update – A translator would help us continue.

all I see is a bunch of people whining about not getting to watch Toradora!….kinda seems insulting to the members of Paradym, it’s not like they are doing this to spite the people who watch their subs, and it’s not like it’s any of our buisiness to know why they broke up if they don’t want to post it…the fact is, fansub groups come and go, yes, this group was a good one, but such is life…
moral: thank Paradym for what they’ve given us instead of griping about what you feel you’ve lost.

Yeah I hope someone will release in Xvid; Until then, I will just be watching on youtube or some streaming sites; My pc doesn’t really have problems with mkv/mp4 but I still want to archive shows like these in formats which can be played on any Divx/Xvid Dvd Player.

So what I am seeing is, “Too bad all my future downloads of Toradora will be MKV/MP4, not AVI.” Is that right? Then why not just rip the subtitle files out of the Aero or Coalguys release and add them directly to a AVI raw? That’s what I’ll be doing tonight anyways… I may even be persuaded to up my results to a Megaupload/Rapidshare/whatever. Oh, and if anyone has a problem with any translation by either Aero or Coalguys, now would be a good time to say.

hey, Abatis, that sounds like a sound idea. Any way u could direct me to a tutorial or somethin so I’d be able to rip the subs as well? For personal use. I’m in a fansubbing group of my own, and another one, so I know how to do timing/typsetting/karaoke and encoding. Ripping subs from .mkvs is a new one for me, though. XD

Yes, Soulie, I am in a fansubbing group, two actually. As far as “pretending” to know how to encode, did I say I knew the ins and outs of it? Perhaps I should’ve been clearer and said I know the basics of it?
I know how encode my sub/karaoke files and such into a raw .avi file, that’s all I’ve had to know. There was no need for me to learn the part of “encoding” that enabled me to know how to rip subs from .mkvs. I don’t do .mkvs, I don’t like .mkvs, therefore I don’t do any encoding of sorts with regards to .mkv >_>

Dymed_AnGel, do a search for MKVExtract on google and download it. You can extract subs that way. But if you are going to do this, you are either going to need the same raw that the mkv was encoded to, or re time the subtitles because more then likely they will be not in time.

Hmm… my earlier post seems to have been deleted. Anyways, MKVExtract is part of MKVToolnix, but it’s REALLY clunky to try and operate by itself, so look for and download MKVExtractGUI. Both are available from Coreforge it’s all free.
Oh, and Matt4212 I didn’t have any problems with either Zeroraws’ or ShinsenRaws’ avi files in terms of timing.

Well, whatever the group’s MKV subs must’ve been timed to the zero-raws or Shinsen-raws raw. But yeah MKVExtractGUI is the way to go…

Another program you can use is AlltoAVI, which is also free and converts MKV to AVI, including optional subtitles. I just used it on a MKV with .h264/.ac3 and it worked out pretty well. It’s a bit clunky, with a lot of “I before E” stuff, but once you get the hang of it you’ll be able to convert entire folders of MKVs.

Just asking, if you want to convert mkv to avi then you have to convert first to lossless before converting to xvid/divx right? Otherwise a good amount of quality will be lost. Anyway, good luck.

Koishi, I’ll miss Paradym’s subs too. I’m just trying to help those people who don’t want to watch MKVs. If you’re one of those people your options are:
1) Download an avi raw from say Tokyo Toshokan, rip the subtitle from a MKV using MKVtoolnix and MKVExtractGUI, then mix the subtitle with the avi using Vobsub or something similar.
Pro: The result is a perfectly good avi that can be burned to DVD, and you get to check the sub for mistakes.
Con: Welcome to the wonderful world of fansubbing! It’s satisfying, but you may not want to do all that for just one series.
2) Convert the MKV, subtitle and all, using AllToAvi or something similar.
Pro: Less headaches, and the program takes care of the variable frame rate (vfr) that would otherwise make the sound/subs wander away from the picture.
Con: Quality can suffer a little or a lot, depending on your settings, the subtitles may not display properly anyways. You can convert the MKV without subtitles into a avi-raw and do #1 again, but that leads you back to Welcome To The Wonderful World Of Fansubbing!
3) Wait for someone else to do a subbed avi file.
Pro: Easiest to do, no special programs to download, no time wasted from your life.
Con: The waiting………………………..

1) I don’t think you can embed a subtitle file in an avi container.
2)Using alltoavi or some similar program will decrease quality since you are re-encoding.
3)The best way to go but it is uncertain and yeah, the waiting kills.

1) It IS possible to softsub a subtitle file into an avi, there are a number of fan-made hentai movies that do just that. (Example: the Blackmail 2 series, which has dual audio and optional subtitles and is still an avi). However, I was referring to making a hardsub avi.
2) My point exactly. Quality WILL suffer using a converter like AlltoAvi. The AMOUNT it suffers can be controlled, though. The point of a converter is that you want a video that can be played/used by most programs (such as DVD burners). Also, if you don’t like how it hardsubbed the MKV you can still use the program to create a raw avi, which is handy if the show has been long since dropped from the torrent sites.
3) Amen.

I really hope someone pick up toradora and release in xvid; You know a good amount on fansubs. Could you make some custom encodes from mkv to lossless then to avi? I can’t afford an HTPC right now so I can only depend on archiving hardsub avi for my dvd player.

I don’t mind doing that, in fact I have eps 9-10 based on Coalguys’ subs already done. The problem is where to put it. I know next to nothing about starting up a torrent, Rapidshare wants money now for uploading, Megaupload doesn’t like to tell you when you’re uploading and nobody wants files above 100mb. Not to mention eventually this site will close down and nobody will know where to find them anyways.

Paradym disbanded?! This is awful! The quality of the translations and encodes were great, so why did you disband? Each going their own ways into other subbing groups? Lack of interest/members inside the group? Members disagreeing with eachother? In any case, it’s sad to see the group go…

If you “know the ins and outs of encoding”, you should know the advantages of the format, like the fact that it can hold much more without nasty or unofficial hacks on the format. Care to explain why you dislike the format if it’s superior to AVI in almost every aspect (with the exception of there not being many devices around YET that can play them natively)?
Just to stop one myth: speed/processing power is not really the issue. I can watch H.264 encoded HD movies quite decently on a PC with a 900 Mhz CPU. Most SD movies should be fine on computers with even only 500 Mhz.

I burn episodes of my favorite unlicensed series to DVD so I can inflict them on other people. You just try to get a complete newbie with a brand new laptop to watch something in a completely foreign language, and THEN tell him, “Oh, and you’ll also need THIS program and THIS codec and from THIS menu over HERE you turn on THIS.” Chances are that he’ll politely accept your DVD-rom and then politely throw it into the trash. You only get one chance to convert someone to the dark side, so the less your victim has to think about the better. All computers can play avi files right after purchase. The less internet searching, the more converts.
P.S. As a side note, I use VLC player because it plays damn near anything from now to many many many years ago and it’s just one download. I’ll accept MKVs when VLC stops overwriting the subtitles and processes them properly.

All files are avi, 1280×720 pixels, 192kbps, mpeg 3 audio. If your DVD player can’t handle something, let me know what it can handle and I’ll try a different format.

I had a problem getting the raws I downloaded to time properly, so I used AllToAvi to convert the Coalguys’ MKVs into raws (downsized to 704×398) for subbing. I used maximum quality settings for conversion, so if you were interested in seeing how much quality is lost due to avi conversion, here ya go.

To be honest, I think Coalguys could have done a better job this time. If anyone has translations for some of the signs that C.G. missed, I’ll be happy to make a version 2.
If anyone’s interested I’m also working on avi versions of Kodomo no Jikan, Sekirei (DVD version), Lime Iro Senkitan (DVD version) and Baccano.
Awhile back I finished a just-for-fun version of Tenchi Muyo GXP that had color-coded subs, background information, slightly more accurate translations, and the occasional smart*** remark because… well, because you would too if you had to deal with THAT much accordian music.

1) Can’t access the website given in the torrent listings;
2) Anirena (who’s hosting the torrents) doesn’t list Paradym amongst its fansubbing groups;
3) In the Details section of Tokyotosho’s torrent listings it doesn’t list any seeders or leechers;
So I’m for them probably being fake. Has anyone downloaded any of the videos yet?

It’s been a while since I last posted. I haven’t downloaded any episodes since episode 08 since I’m still waiting for others to pick up where paradym left off. ^Abatis, Thx for uploading 9-12 so I still have a last resort. I’ll try to download episode 11 and compare it with another release of episode 11 to see if it is fake or not; Sucks a bit for me since I will see a bit of spoiler.

@Archiver… avi isn’t archive worthy, if you call yourself a true archiver, you should be grabbing the h264 encodes.

Avi files are harder to find this days; I don’t need to archive h264 encodes since you can get them anytime you want while the avi releases are getting scarce lately. If you know of a standalone media player which can play mkv h264 fansubs with no problem, then I might reconsider.

Abatis_Treefaller: with devices, I literally meant devices which can NOT possibly play them, like most DVD and media players. Laptops will always be able to play MKVs because it’s a simple install away (CCCP), but for specialized devices this would be quite a different matter… So unless you’re distributing DVDs containing AVIs for all those with special media playing devices, the point is moot, yes.

Archiver: try SMPlayer, I think it can play H.264 out of the box (though I’m not sure because I haven’t tried SMPlayer for Windows). It also has a sweet, extensive interface.

@ Treefaller, thanks for your hard work. Its really appreciated that someone is helping out those that enjoy the AVI format. Are you still going to do any work with the Kodomo no Jikan DVD series? Bakawolf and Lolipop along with S.S.S were doing them a while back and then they dropped it at Episode 9 in either format. It’d be great to get those if you could. I don’t like SMPlayer. After a while of using it, the sound and the subtitle becomes messed up..Sometimes the sound is late and sometimes the subtitle is late..

you do realize he’s talking about playing them on a standalone dvd player.. software for windows won’t work on a standalone dvd player.. only xvid/divx avis with/without srt subtitles will and you’re limited to a max resolution of 720×480, no custom matrixes, no qpel, no gmc and no DTS audio and the srt cannot be in unicode format only ansi format.
would be nice if the fansub groups who only do .mp4/.mkv would realize that a lot of ppl who d/l and watch fansubs do so on standalone dvd players not thier computers.

I meant a standalone player as in a device like XVID enabled DVD player not some software that runs on windows; My pc isn’t an issue as it can play any of my downloaded videos fine through Media player classic and some individually installed codecs. Anyway, I’ll just finish archiving toradora and some other animes which I’m also archiving right now before I move on to downloading H264. Maybe I’ll just try to get my hands on a separate HTPC or Laptop of my own. Avi files will soon be phased out so I have to move on.

Ppl please help, the problem is about karaoke in openings, in some anime like Toradora (Paradym release of course) it plays fine, but in other anime it just words, but effect is gone.

I’m quite happy that Paradym continues, in a way. I came for .AVI but stayed for the quality. And by the way, some people confuse quality and video resolution. They are not the same. The old Paradym subs were quite nicely done after the ep.2.

Anyone know of a GOOD way to play .mkv on a Mac? VLC does a poor job, (overlapping subtitles, extensive translator comments, etc.) and I’m not computer savvy enough to convert files to .avi.

Abatis, you are a God-send. Thanks for the avi.’s. Just like everyone else, I’m still confused…Paradym shouldn’t be subbing as per the “notice” that they are (cough) “no more”.
yet here we are. For now, I;m still getting a chuckle that everyone has passed Aero Subs which started big and ended with a whimper when Aniyoshi of all fansub groups, passed them in finishing Ga Rei Zero. Same thing applies to Paradym if they are able to “magically” sub until the finish and I always keep/archive one sub group from start to finish.
And please stop this nonsense that Paradym is “no more” when clearly they are releasing subs. Keep up the good work.

thanks again for your hard work treefaller. TBH I had placed Toradora aside since there was no one working on AVIs of it after Paradym stopped. So now I’m just picking it back up again after finishing Rosario + Vampire 2 and downloading the rest of Kodomo No Jikan.
Just out of curiosity, has anyone seen anyone working on Kodomo no Jikan Nigakki (Second Term)? It’s supposively a 3 part OVA and the first one is supposed to be released on 1-21-09. I haven’t seen any of the usual fan sub groups I follow state they’re going to work on it.

ob1foru: I gave up on Rosario+Vampire II because of the severe censorship (I mean, censoring someone’s PANTIES???). If DVD-rips come out I wouldn’t mind working on that series — and I call dibs on that math teacher. As for Kodomo no Jikan II, I haven’t even seen raws for it yet. The last thing out was OVA 2: “Rin’s Classroom Diary” — which seemed to me to be just a recap of the series.

yeah the censoring was pretty bad on some of those episodes. I’m hoping those raws do come out. There were scenes cut out of some of the episodes in addition to the upskirt censoring. Plan idiotic if you ask me, they’ve shown far worse and no one raised hell about it. The math teacher is hawt however I’m torn between Kurumu and Mizore. Though Ruby was also nice as well. Especially in the opening of the second season lol.
I downloaded Rin’s Classroom Diary already. Was nice to having a different prospective on the entire first season. Kinda wish they would do a second season instead of a 3 part OVA. There was plenty in the manga they left out.

I checked out ASF’s site for Sora o Kakeru, and unfortunately they have only the SD and HD’s – BOTH in the MKV format.
No divx, avi, xvid’s.
I watch anime on my TV with a Divx DVD player, and for some reason, the Toradora episodes you put on SendSpace… The only ones that work seem to be the smaller 704 versions, not the 1280.
I don’t know if anyone else is in the same situation, but if it’s a chore to post 2 versions, and we’re all in the same boat, you may consider just sticking with the smaller versions that work.
But I don’t want to speak for all of us, only myself.
So while I know this is volunteer work for you, I’d never make any sort of demand… You totally rock for even doing anything for those of us in this community!
But please consider what I’ve mentioned here, and I’ll try to track down some Zoku Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei for you… I may have the episode(s) you need.
And if there’s anything you need of me, please don’t hesitate to ask… It’s the least I can do to repay your help!

thanks again for your hard work treefaller. I’m finally catching up with this series however I haven’t tried to run them on my DVD player yet. After I finish downloading the last release here I’ll copy them onto a disk and try them on mine to see if I have the same problem.
What kind of DVD player are you using otakusensei? Mine’s a Samsung. I’ve had a few problems with other series where the codecs they used when they encoded the anime into the AVI format wasn’t compatible, however for the most part I haven’t had many problems. Again I’ll try mine when it finishes. TBH I’m a bit surprised this last release was so huge for the 1280×720. Sometimes I wonder if the fansubbers all have multiple 1 TB hard drives or something lol. 300+ MB episodes is a bit insane! XD

Just to give an update, I just scanned through Toradora 1-16 on my Samsung DVD player. I downloaded episodes 1-11 and 16 in 704×398 and 12-15 in 1280×720. My DVD player gives me a message stating “The file you attempting to play has an unsupported resolution” message when I attempt to play the 1280×720 AVIs.
And just for the record, my DVD player is a Samsung DVD-F1080 model; it is an up-conversion 720p/1080p/1080i with progressive scan and Playback Formats of MP3, WMA, VCD, SVCD, JPEG, MPEG-4, and DivX (if that matters to anyone that’s wondering lol >.>; )
Anyway, I’m just going to go back and download the 704×398 formats so I can play them all through my DVD player and watch them on my wide screen. If there are people that want the larger format and/or if Treefaller doesn’t mind continuing doing both, that’s cool. Either way, I’m happy as long as one of them plays on my DVD player. ^^

ob1foru, I’ve tried different brands of Divx DVD players, and mine is probably the best I’ve ever had access to so far as concerning compatibility issues.
Mine is an RCA. – It plays nearly everything I’ve thrown at it, and overall I’m very satisfied with it. Even plays a lot of windows media.
It’s Divx certified, and while Divx and Xvid are apparently 2 different things, for the most part it plays Xvid avi files just fine.
But you’re right about the occasional compatibility issues, resulting in anime that don’t have video and only audio, OR anime episodes that have sync problems between the audio and video not matching.
Not completely sure what causes that problem with the sync. Mp3 versus non-mp3, I’m not sure.
I have Divx and Xvid and Media Player Classic and other CCCP stuff available to me, and if I knew how to convert ALL avi files into files that would play on a Divx certified DVD player the way they’re supposed to, then I’d be VERY happy! — This would solve SOME issues, especially with older anime episodes.
I’ve had some success converting some files, but I haven’t had enough experience yet to do it all.
So far, I’ve been able to convert some files that I downloaded that say that they are Xvid, but when burned as a data DVD, the audio and video don’t sync. — I converted them into Divx, and burned those as a data DVD, and that seemed to solve the problem.
I was trying out VirtualDub, and I use Nero for burning.
When I have time, I’ll watch more of these converted files, and see if there’s any noticeable issues remaining.
But for the ones with audio and no video, I’ve had NO luck on those as of yet.
But yeah, avi isn’t always fully compatible.
As for the larger files, like what I was trying to say before was that if I downloaded both the larger and smaller versions of the same Toradora episodes, as an example, that when I played them the smaller file played just fine, BUT the larger file had audio only.
So I don’t know what was the main difference that would cause this problem to occur. – Different encoding process?
If anyone’s an expert, feel free to school us. – Might make Abatis_Treefaller’s life easier if nothing else!

I use a generic branded DivX player and almost all I play works.
As for resolution size, I think most of all DivX/DVD players work on a maximum resolution of 720×512, more than that you only get the audio and error such as “Video Resolution not supported” Other factors that make it incompatible for some AVI files not to play on DVD players are audio; some encoded on VBR, when played has no sound but video is ok but most of them support AC3 too (my Mai-Otome Zwei from Static Subs has AC3 and they work fine); and what most fansubbers use…GMC encoded in their AVI coz they dont work on DivX players.

I usually re-encode the video in VirutualDub with the average bitrate used and and I get mostly 4-5% loss of quality only with a 1-pass on it. GMC is usually used by fansubbers nowadays but has nothing to do with quality of the anime file.

To check if your AVI has GMC embedded on it, use GSpot (www.headbands.com/gspot/) and check if the GMC is lit up on the upper right. Encode if needed if it has GMC.

The reason I upload wide-screen videos of Toradora and others is because those are usually the sizes avi raws come in. The smaller videos are usually my mkv-to-avi conversions which, as someone once pointed out, are somehow not as good. Quality or something like that.
I don’t mind doing both versions since I have multiple computers. So it’s not like I can’t kill things on my PC because I’m waiting on a compilation to complete. I just don’t want to upload something that won’t get downloaded.
If you’re one of those who likes the huge screen videos, then now would probably be the time to pipe up.

^^ I’m so glad they did this episode with Kuro-chan and Shiro-chan. I found it so humorous in the manga when she started taking a liking to her as opposed to her bi / old man liking of Rin-chan. (haha)
What’s freakin sad, the episode was actually CLEANER then what they aired on air visual wise! No boxes or anything hiding what’s “too dirty for viewers that have seen far worse.”

To everyone else, at 12:04 into episode 17 there’s a dream sequence that starts with a sign saying “Ikemen Only”. Ikemen is japanese slang for a cool guy, which proved to be too much of a temptation for Coal Guys, who changed it to that instead. Anon is right, that sort of thing is despicable.

Hi, Abatis_Treefaller, I’ve seen a few Kodomo no Jikan posts here. So if it’s possible, how about the original series in Divx DVD player format? – Prefferably uncensored.
Also I’ve never seen Umisho done in anything but mkv.
And I don’t think there was ever a full series release of Kamen no Maid Guy done in this format either… Yet alone to your caliber of quality.
Just tossing some ideas out there, totally up to you. I’m sure we’re all grateful for all that you’ve done and continue to do… I know I am! THANKS!!

Kamen no Maid Guy: I absolutely hated the stay-tuned-for-the-next-season ending, especially since there WON’T be a next season. Nobody is translating the manga either so we’ll never know what happens.
Not to mention I can never forgive the girl’s brother. He was given a beautiful personal maid to HIS specifications, and what does he DO? Stays in his room and plays love-sim games. Wrong! Wrong! Wrong! WRONG! WRONG!

Yep, I got the 12 Kodomo no Jikan episodes when they were originally posted a couple weeks back or so. Unfortunately, if I remember right, they didn’t work so far as Divx…
Will double-check and find out to be sure. – I think it had sound but no video, as I recall.
All I know about the Kamen no Maid Guy is that I saw some of it, liked what I saw, and hoped to have a complete series and storyline out of it… Didn’t know it was abruptly ended while the story should have continued.
And you’re right on the Fubuki thing, I’d be jealous! – Lucky little punk!
But Wikipedia says that “The ending sets up the plot of season two which has yet to be announced. ” – So maybe there’s hope?
Heck, they made a season 2 of Rosario Vampire, even though the reviews of season one were somewhat mixed… Maybe if they get a second Kamen green-lit, then it’ll work out good for everyone.
I’ve never seen a single Umisho episode… please explain the nose thing. Maybe it’s merely the art style of the manga or animators?
Besides, I think we’ve all seen anime characters with green and purple hair, and of course the larger than anatomically correct eye-size… What’s wrong with less than visible noses?
I know there’s a lot of swimming involved with the series, so maybe in a strange decision of streamlining the body to swim faster (kinda like the body shaving thing), they removed them?

Umisho is about a guy who’s terrified of the water since he was almost drowned by a mermaid when he was young. So (naturally) he’s a member of the school swim team. Then he meets a rather eccentric (and usually half-naked) girl who knew him back then, swims like the Man From Atlantis, and who looks somewhat like the mermaid who almost killed him.
The “Invisible Noses” is just that — from the front there’s nothing there. No tiny lines, no shadow, no nostrils, nothing. Most unsettling. I keep expecting someone to ribbit.

Lolicon: Sorry, but it’s a pain to download individual episodes (especially since they’re almost at the end), so I’m going to wait until I can get a torrent of the entire series first.
That said, I’ve downloaded FMP:TSR from Lime so I’ll see if I can do something with that.

For all you people who would like to convert files from .mkv to Xvid or whatever file…you can do that online for free. Just go to http://www.media-converter.com Just put in the original file load, click it’s type and then click the type you’d like it converted too and you just wait until the process is over and then upload it onto your computer again.
It’s quick, easy and a few clicks.
As for Paradym, if you read this I am a devoted fan and I’m thoroughly upset to see you go. I saw you had uploaded 3 more eps since your demise but as a fan and so many of us are I’d love for you to come back. You’re missed. I followed you because you had the best translations not for the quality (which was superb as well) of the videos. You’re subs were easy to understand and I LOVED karaoke style. You’re thoroughly missed considering Coalguys has awful subs, Aero is a disaster, and gg/qq does nothing for me.

I got everything dl’ed except the toradara eps….cuz I got stopped for today . I got the “You have reached your daily download limit (1GB). ” warning after 21.3gb downloading XD

Apropos other animes that should be made to avi, think you asked somewhere in here before, I would recommend a few:
Sakura Taisen – the tv serie (ovas would be great too)
Aquarian Age (a.f.k. released the avis a long time ago but they are nowhere to be found)
Kure-nai
and lastly Spice and Wolf OVA (TV special the only one not in avi by ayako who did the rest in avi -_-)
Metal heaven – Sadly I can only find a bad ogm version out there. So I guess that would be a no since there aren’t any better out there.
Those are the only ones I can think of atm, hope it helps. Thx again many times for the avi, appreciate it. Btw you really don’t need to be sorry cuz you had to split an avi into two, we all are thankful for someone like you doing this for someone like us.

The subs are in (or were converted from) .srt format, which as any fansubber would tell you is the WORST possible way to add subs short of handing you a sheet of paper and telling you to read along with the action. It’s an absolute mess –

Abatis: Nowdays, you can get a torrent seedbox for it but I know it will cost ya money for it so its out of the question but its a good way to torrent your converted files faster than direct download.
I wouldn’t suggest MegaCrapload for the DDL site… thus we can pool our heads for this in finding an efficient DDL hosting site for now.

It’s working for SOMEBODY, according to my info. Give it another shot, it may just be that the tracker was slow in updating. Also, I turn off all seeds every sunday as I need the computer for multiplayer games. I may also take them offline temporarily so I can upload to Sendspace.

Hi, Abatis_Treefaller, just letting you know that I for one have no problems with getting your video files from SendSpace.
I don’t know why anyone would prefer a torrent download over a direct download, other than the file checking that torrents offer. – But then again, a direct download coupled with a torrent to check the file might be nice, but not necessary.
I hate to have people tie-ing up your computer, especially if you need it for yourself! – Mostly true for the leechers out there who refuse to seed when done! – So I see why you wouldn’t like torrents.
On another note, I know it’s been a little while now, but YES, I did get the Kodomo no Jikan episodes from post number #97… And it’s the ONLY ones I’ve had problems watching!
Again, I watch on a Divx DVD player, and looking at the information of the file, I believe that the dimensions or resolution of the picture is the culprit.
They’re 848×480, which apparently Divx doesn’t like.
You do so much for us anime lovers, so I hate to whine and gripe about all that you’ve done for us… We really do appreciate your efforts, I promise you that!
And I don’t want to ask you to re-encode that entire series due to that. — So, could you please tell me how I might go about converting these files to work with the Divx DVD player? – I know there will be some shrinking or reductions to be made.
If I could learn that, AND how to convert from mkv’s as good as you do, that’d be freaking awesome!

Not to worry, I still have all my old files so it’ll be fairly painless for me to re-encode Kodomo no Jikan at 704×398. Look for it, say… Tuesday night/Wednesday morning-ish.
If you people want to make your own encodes, here’s how I’ll do it for the Kodomo no Jikan series:
Step 1: Download the series in MKV. Look for H264/x264 in the title, as those are the easiest and best-looking conversions.
Step 2: Download and install the following free programs:
1. x264vfw — x264 codec, allows you to add subtitles to AVIs converted from MKVs;
2. mkvtoolnix — Installs MKV creator and (more importantly) MKV extract programs;
3. MKVExtractGUI — The MKV extract program from mkvtoolnix is EXTREMELY user-unfriendly. This little dohickie does all the work for you. Run program, select MKV, click on what you want extracted, done;
4. Alltoavi — Converts anything to avi. Although a little clunky, does great work with x264/h264/mp4 files. Do NOT use this program to convert with subtitles into AVIs. It’s possible, but not very accurate;
5. AVI Recomp — What I use to add subtitles to avi files. Doesn’t like x264 though, which is why you need the codec;
6. (Optional) Aegisub — Very handy subtitle editing/creating program, useful if you are trying to convert FMP:TSR or trying to fix an R+V:C2 episode. Good for special effects subtitles too. Works with both .ASS and .SRT subtitle files. By the way, AVI Recomp doesn’t like .SRT subtitles, but Aegisub can convert them over to .ASS subtitles.
Step 3: Use MKVExtractGUI to pull .ASS/.SRT subtitle files and any fonts used (that you don’t have already) from the MKVs. Note this does not destroy the MKV files, so if you screw up something, just go back to the MKV and extract again.
Step 4: Use Alltoavi to convert MKV files to AVIs. Click Add File or Add Folder. It will warn you it wants to use the special x264 conversion, click Yes. Two windows will pop up. In the first window on the top right it will list the frame rate (usually “FPS: 23.98″). On the second window underneath there is a choice between 23.00 to 23.99 and 24.xx. Click on the first one and click okay to close window. On the top window leave all options alone EXCEPT:
Video Bitrate (pulldown menu) — Select “high quality, large file (1000KBPS)”
To the right of the Video Bitrate menu there is the video size (top = horizontal, bottom = vertical). If video size is too high, set top to 704. Note the bottom automatically sets itself to 396-398.
Close menu down so there is only the main menu, click CONVERT. Go eat a sandwich. If you told it to convert an entire folder, go to bed. Expect 16-30 minutes per episode.
Step 5: Assuming you trust the subtitle files, run AVI Recomp. Select first video file. Select or rename avi-with-subs file. Do NOT use video size pulldown menu. Look at size of input file, add 30-40mb, enter that instead. Click on Additions menu. Enable subtitle files, browse and select sub you want. Click on Queue menu. Click on Add to Queue. Wash, Rinse, Repeat for each episode. Click on Start, walk away again. Expect 30-45 minutes per episode.
Step 6: Upload to Sendspace, expect 20-45 minutes per episode with a fast connection (I have Comcast Cable). Announce here. Bow to loud applause, nod to polite applause, be ready to duck tomatoes.
Step 7: (Optional) Create torrent and leave computer on 24/7 after doing step 6.

I’ll see about following your instructions… Worse comes to worse, you may have just helped a lot of people quit nagging you for a while, LOL!
And it’s not like I’m in love with the KnJ series, but it surprised me that it seemed to be the only one that didn’t work outside of the higher res Toradora, which was explainable.
I appreciate your willingness to re-do the series, but I’ll still try out what you’re recommending, as I enjoy the challenge of new things sometimes. – I’ve only been able to do some things so far, and I want to be able to do more.

I think only one group ever did it, but I think they did complete it. And it was all mkv, due to some technical reason I can’t remember. — Supposedly they couldn’t find a way to make it Divx DVD player friendly, or maybe they never tried.
BUT I figure if there was a technical reason, and you wanted a challenge, you might give that one a shot.
If anyone can do it I’m sure it’d be you!!

I watched a few of the episodes, but just couldn’t get into the series. Also, Chihiro subbed it, which is usually enough for me not to watch it. For those who don’t know, Chihiro is one of the fastest fansubber groups out there — usually at the cost of anything resembling quality. Still, I’ll download it and see what I can do.

Otakusensei: Just use VirtualDub to resize the avi files you have DL’ed so there is no need to reconvert from MKV to AVI.
Step 1: DL GSpot (www.headbands.com/gspot/) then install it and just google VirtualDub and DL it too.
Step 2: Run GSpot, load the avi file (you can use drag and drop too) then note down the kbps value on the middle right column (that is the average bitrate of the avi file).
Step 3: Close Gspot and run VirtualDub. Click on Video>Filters>Add>Choose Resize on the list>OK>Set it to 700×400 or 704×396 and Filter Mode to Bicubic.
Step 4: Go to Video>Compression>Choose XviD on the list>Configure>Set the target bitrate according to the one noted down in the Gspot.
Profile Level: Advanced Simple@L5
Encoding Type: Single Pass
Click OK all the way through.
Step 5: Go to File>Save as AVI>then wait for 12-15 minutes per episode depending on the bitrate (higher means longer resizing).

The 3rd digit from the end… It’s not right as it is, that’s a multiplication symbol as it stands.
Delete it, make it a lower case letter x and it seems to work fine after that.

Is anyone else having problems with Toradora! 21? It keeps stuttering/skipping on me when using WMP classic and CCCP codecs. VLC starts with a black screen for the first 5 seconds or so, then plays normally. I even went back and tried ep 20 again and its working fine, so it shouldn’t be my PC.

I’m with you, Abatis_Treefaller.
Although I haven’t had a chance to watch up to this point in the story-line on Toradora (damn personal responsibilities!), I skipped through the 704×396 version of ep. 21 and watched bits and pieces, and nothing seemed out of place for me, everything seemed normal.
When I get more free time from my 2 jobs, UGH!, I’ll give it a careful examination and give some feedback… Provided someone else doesn’t give examples of things not going well in the episode, like timing issues.

First and foremost, thanks for continuing to sub Toradora, Abatis! Secondly, I have a question:
Is it just me, or is the timing for the subs off? I downloaded the file through the torrent and I was trying to view the 1280 x 720 version. Up until the intro is over, it’s fine, but after that, there seems to be about a ten second delay. So, anyone experiencing this?

That’s nice of you LastReqess to offer Abatis_Treefaller help. But call me crazy, but to me smart enough to re-encode like they have been = smart enough to get rid of a virus.
Besides, it may be wise to limit email information on a forum like this due to possible unwanted messages. Especially since viruses, malware, trojans and other such nasties could piggy-back on some of them.
I’m just hoping that it doesn’t become an ordeal to get rid of that junk… I’ve had to do this before too. But that was before getting sturdier protection and watching my activities.
You just end up praying that your important files are backed-up in case you have to wipe everything clean, and hope that what nailed one computer doesn’t spread to others.
What’s even more fun is the ones that replicate themselves in the background all the while you thought you had deleted it!
Sick sense of humor some of these writers have to create this crap! – Probably illegal too.

Just so you know, Coalguys is getting fed up with the lovey-dovey angst arc in the series, and it’s starting to show in their subs. There were several mistakes in this episode I had to go and fix. Hopefully I got them all.

Personally, I was hoping for Taiga to get adopted. She wants to be part of a loving family, both he and his mother treat her like a little sister anyways, and this would have let him chase Minorin OR (hinthint) Amin-chan.
I guess my main problem is lust. The only time our guy felt it was with Amin-chan, so I kinda have a hard time seeing him have a serious relationship with anyone else.
Except maybe with the teacher.

Yeah, LastReqess, there’s a pimple-faced teenager in their Mom’s basement whining about how hard their life is, that just found how to do that junk that suddenly thinks to themself that it might be fun to do this.
They do this for fun, causing SO much damage to people that may have never known that they need to protect themselves online from punks like that. – I know, I’ve helped countless people from that kind of mischief on a regular basis!
Or worse organized crime that’s not there just to cause trouble, but to steal your identity and/or your money. – These guys are more sophisticated and know how to cause more damage, AND how to hide it better! So you don’t even know it’s going on. And you keep going on while you don’t know they’re doing their thing to you until it’s after the fact, half the time.
But I’m glad Abatis_Treefaller is up and running again! – Nice people like them shouldn’t have to deal with troubles like that!
THANK YOU again for all the anime! I’m just sad that Toradora is coming to a close… Nice series while it lasted.

Your downloads are a Godsend for those of us who prefer Divx and Xvid files over the mkv files that most fansub groups crank out these days! – Why does the same anime episode get put out by half a dozen or more groups and it’s all in the same format?
It’s a waste of time, and there’s room for originality by doing other formats that others may enjoy. – Thank You for existing!!!
As for suggestions, I can do a semi-list of things I’d like to see, but of course some are better candidates than others and I don’t know how extensive your back-log of anime is because some of this is a little older…
I personally would still like to watch Kamen no Maid Guy in it’s entirety. Despite what other people may say.
Also, I recall you doing some season one Sekirei, and I think you had stopped at episode 10? – It was the uncensored DVD version I think. Same with Rosario Vampire, but I’m not sure that it was you that was doing those.
Birdy the Mighty I think I have on VHS somewhere, but the recent stuff I don’t think had compatible episodes.
Detroit Metal City looks good, so does Ride Back, maybe Vipers Creed.
Not sure what to think of Examurai Sengoku, and I don’t think ANYONE ever finished releases of Fighting Beauty Wulong, the newer Golgo 13, the newer Slayers, Himawari! 2, or Inukami.

I could never get He Is My Master to convert right, and along with the maid thing, I can’t seem to find They Are My Noble Masters.
Oh yeah, SCHOOL DAYS, I seem to have gotten cut off from those, I think there was a format change that threw off my player or something… I remember something about the Nice Boat and a twisted ending that I never saw. No spoilers please!
SORRY about all of that, PLEASE don’t think I’m trying to get you to do all of those! – I wouldn’t expect you to do half that!
But a lot of those I’m sure that many of us would like to see as there weren’t compatible files of those for the most part. I wasn’t trying to rattle off a list of chores for you, merely typing what floated in my tiny little brain when you asked for suggestions.
Again, please don’t think that you have to do all of that I mentioned above! – We and me included, appreciate anything that you make available, I promise!

hmmmm….some of otakusensei’s suggestions sounds nice though a few are out in avi (well except if you want the DVD versions in avi) and Himewari s2 is still being subbed, I think.
I support him on Monster Princess aka Kaibutsu Oujo, Murder Princess, They Are My Noble Masters and Rideback. Though the first 3 where the DVD version is used.
I have actually tried to find the old a.f.k version of Aquarian Age TV series and Leeching-Alliance version of Sakura Taisen which were in avi but they are nowhere to get. So I would like Aquarian Age (13eps) and Sakura Taisen(25eps) (both the TV series) could be re-encoded to avi.

Likewise Abatis_Treefaller, sorry to take away your fun. Concerning Afro Samurai, a site called seedpeer.com has had the torrents for Afro Samurai including both the original uncut mini series, and Resurrection.
I did get both of those, and as I recall, both were fully functional on my Divx DVD player burned to a blank DVD.
I’ll see if I can re-seed the torrents for you, so long as no one minds english dubbed anime… Some of us are subtitle only around here!

otakusensei: I don’t know how I missed your files all this time (posted my uploads when I was dead-tired, perhaps?), but thank you so much! I gave up on Afro Samurai since I couldn’t get a decent mp3 of the audio.
I couldn’t find torrents (or at least not decent torrents) for these series: Beauty Wulong, Himawari 2, Examurai Sengoku, and Vipers Creed. I have IRC so if you know a channel bot I can download from I can do that instead.
Aquarian Age (for some reason NOT related to Heroic Age) is not mp4/acc but actual avi/mp3 (but in MKV format), and the subtitles are in SRT just like Full Metal Panic — meaning don’t hold your breath, this is going to take a while to get right.
Sakura Taisen is available in a mix of OGMs and what not, so it’s possible to make AVIs of them, but it probably won’t look good.
Haven’t looked at Detroit Metal City yet.

Hmm… Let me check my Ride Back files again. I believe it worked with my VLC player, but that may have been pre-conversion.
Evangelion: As far as I know, there aren’t any programs that can edit .idx/.sub files (outside of a DVD’s vob files, that is) and it’s too much of a hassle to convert them to .sup files that can be converted into .srt files which would then have to be converted into .ass files… So I’ve downloaded a fansub .ass version and will be using that instead. Aside from some missing translations (background people talking on intercoms), and a couple other annoyances it should work fine. I’ve watched it all the way through and had no problems. If someone finds a better subtitle version I’ll redo it. The subtitle is by NF, version 1.01.
Golgo 13: Okay, I’ll get on that.
Shikabane Hime KURO? WAH! I haven’t finished watching/converting the AKA series yet…!
In other news, I have enough now to make episodes 8&9 of Rosario Vampire Capu 2. I’ll try to release them along with the Evangelion movie. Episode 8 was basically an omake, so it had lots of titles… that the fansubbers put directly onto their censored video versions instead of into their subtitle files. Seriously, if you’re going to put subtitles and special effects onto your videos anyways, then WHY do a MKV version at all??? Isn’t it about the same amount of conversion time used either way? [Gripe... Grouse...]

Sorry for the late reply. I lost my job so I’m forced to do the usual rounds of jumping through bureaucratic hoops and rear-end smooching to try and find another one, instead of doing what I want. It’s bad enough anywhere else but I live in Albuquerque, New Mexico (state motto: “You didn’t expect to live here with just ONE job, did you?”).

I can re-up the Toradora eps if you like, either to Sendspace or as a private torrent. Unfortunately, I only kept the SD (720×400 size) files. If that’s not a problem, then I’ll get to it.

scarywater is no good….mostly cuz licensed anime is a no-no.
It would be stupid to split the torrents up on two trackers when you just can put them on one

Ditto. I have no problem making re-encodes — I’d do them anyways — but the re-encodes of Full Metal Panic – The Second Raid would get just about anybody shut down. We’re fairly safe here since this website is pretty much dead (low traffic), I use Sendspace instead of hosting the files on a website, and whenever I do host a torrent it’s only for a week or so and I use an older version of utorrent that lets me encrypt the information I send.
Personally I’d prefer Tokyo Toshokan to Mininova, since TT is closer to the target audience and more people check it for anime than Mininova. You might also consider FTP or IRC.

Fortunately their quality and translation skills are pretty good, compared to II-Subs. I appreciate your posting some nice Xvids for us to enjoy, even in these difficult times that we all seem to be affected by.
It’s good to see that some of the series that were started some time ago are starting to get finished up. I know that Rosario Vampire is getting close, for example.
But it’s been a while for Sekirei, any possibility of that happening? – Are all of the DVDs in Japan out yet for the series? I know that it is being continued later this year with a sequel series.
Also, no one has a Queen’s Blade for what I can tell. I’ve tried to download some MKV files and tried to convert them to avi xvid, but I can’t seem to get the subtitles to work even if I get the video to go.
I’m currently trying out AVS trial software for this, with limited to no results. And I can’t seem to find anything locally to buy in stores to convert them properly. Doesn’t help that MKV files (which in my opinion are highly overrated) aren’t even in the list of files that the software can handle.
With all the compatible Divx players out there between the DVD players and game systems, I really don’t see why more fansubbers can’t do more with the video file… You’d think it would be more popular than ever.
Heck, even my PlayStation 3, as with all the formats it can handle, I can’t watch MKVs on it!
I know I’m preaching to the crowd, but geez, is it too much to ask for more Xvid love? – Or at least do tutorials on anime sites on how to do it yourself if they don’t want to?
Sometimes even if they do an Xvid, it doesn’t play right. It’s like they’re being sloppy… I know fansubs are done not for profit, but is it too much to ask to have some pride?
Anyhow, sorry to rant. But yeah, Sekirei and Queen’s Blade and Zettai Shougeki if nothing else…

johnnyboy213: I don’t mind putting up a torrent, but I hope you can wait a little longer since I have my internet computer tied up converting Guin Saga and Shikabane Hime Aka/Kuro at the moment.
otakusensei: Somehow mkv has become the nerdgasm for fansubbers, mostly because:
a) It’s incredibly easy to make, and doesn’t care what file formats you chuck in;
b) Which means you CAN use file formats with greater resolution, greater sound in multiple languages all in one nice tidy package… that you can’t burn to DVD with;
c) All those websites that charge you to download “their” videos and all those people who upload “their” videos to Youtube and all those people who charge you to buy “their” DVDs are kinda screwed because of MKV, and that pleases the most bitter fansubbers to no end;
d) It’s the wave of the future, supposedly. Although I HAVE seen DVD burners that actually DO support MKVs, I haven’t seen much fan-support or any kind of rush to buy them. Odd that.
I do have the DVD raws for Sekirei, as well as all three fansub translations for it. It was one of my projects, along with Potemayo, Lime Iro Senkitan, Otome Wa Boku Ni Koishiteru, Aquarian Age, Gurren Lagann, Golgo 13, and a more “japanified” Saber Marionette J like I did with Tenchi Muyo GXP.
However, the last I checked with Queen’s Blade it didn’t have a serious translation to go with it. Every fansub I looked into either had “English as a second language” or “I don’t know how to use a spellcheck” problems. Has that changed?
Zettai Shougeki? Sounds like Ikkitousen or Tenjou Tenge. I’ll look into it.

ok, i wont force to do it if u dont want to, i do like the anime, but i understand that some people lost patience with it and the fillers (on my side, i would say that i was one of those people who saw ALL the Endless Eight of suzumiya haruhi in 2 days XD)
other than that, i can actually say wich episodes are filler and wich ones not because i’ve doing this “menu” file from each anime i’ve seen, so i can tell =P … at least until 053 from shippuden cause there is where i’ve done the menu till now

i understand, but for example i cant find anything to get one of my friends (who plays D&D with me and roll plays a ranger with a barbarian complex) into fruit basket for example (to name an anime)

FLCL = 6 insane episodes, they should like it
Ghost in the shell = the movies of course and if they like it get them to watch the series.
Akira = old but classic sci-fi anime movie based on the better manga.
Cowboy Bebop = If they don’t like this one….they need a new brain (not my favorite anime watched but it is one of the best anime on the list….plus it’s more “western” than most anime out there^^)
-and since you want to make them watch naruto which is highly shounen, go for Bleach, Katekyo hitman Reborn and One Piece.

I like the idea of FLCL. It’s along the lines of, “If you can’t boggle them with BRILLIANCE, baffle them with BULL**IT!” — although I usually use the movie Paprika for that. Gets them off balance, and while they’re busy saying “WTF???”, or “Drugs are better in Japan!”, I hit them with the good stuff.

lol@abatis; well funny thing with FuriCuri is that you can actually analyze it and get to a normal teenager boy’s growth into puberty (now this is more insane shit than the anime put together with the idiocy out there….the fanscare, lol)

i finished checking narutoverse and darksoulsubs… both suck… but i can watch them (but i cant add them to my collection of anime that is the one i show to my friends), so i wont be asking for a reencode of it (at least not for now, mwajajajajja)
anyway, a friend of mine asked me to get one anime, that is xxxholic, i’m downloading the first season (was pretty dificult since it was licensed), the ovas and the second season (kei) but cant manage to find the movie in avi, does someone know where can i get it… if not…. can someone (aka: abatis_treefaller) reencode it? sorry for the bother as always ^^U
also, for The-One, u can find XXXHolic in avi (the first season) in btmon.com i dont know yet how’s the quality, i need to check it, but its there, for the second season u can download from SHS fansub, and for the ovas, in TokyoTosho u can find them from ACG fansub (the only thing missing is the movie)
